About the Student Aid Tree Project
A FREE Resource for Students and Parents Seeking Financial
Aid
We are a broad-based group of former-students from across
the USA who are working to implement a system that provides
unbiased
information about financial aid, which includes scholarships,
grants and student loans.
The cost of education is not decreasing and we are concerned
about the rise in student debt and
the fact that college-bound applicants may not be aware that
there are a variety of options available to students. The
very colleges that we attend may have no idea how much debt
students are taking on.
When college financial aid officers got into trouble last
year for accepting gifts from lenders, the moral of the story
was clear: You could easily overpay for your student loan
by simply borrowing from a college’s recommended lender
without first shopping around. Unfortunately, shopping around
is easier said than done. With problems in the credit markets
continuing to plague student loan providers, many lenders
have limited their product offerings and worse yet, closed
their doors altogether. As a result, students and parents
are now left wondering "who's left"
to borrow from.
Our goal is to develop a simple framework
that provides students and parents of students access to financial
aid information that is comprehensive, unbiased, and in
the best interest of the students.
Student Aid Tree is a free
service, but more so, this site is an open-source national
project. We encourage suggestions, contributions and participation
in order to enhance the functionality of the site. Together,
we may end up building the best source for financial aid on
the web.
